Mr. Colin Giles, president of Nokia China, made the statement at a event in Macau, China.
To help promote the TD-SCDMA, Nokia said that the company has started developing a TD-SCDMA device based on Symbian S60 which will be launched before the end of 2009.
One of the international standards recognized by the International Telecommunications Union, TD-SCDMA or Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access is being developed in China by the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Technology (CATT), Datang and Siemens AG.
"By launching the S60-based TD-SCDMA device, Nokia combines Symbian's massive resources with the market opportunities provided by TD-SCDMA. There are currently over 10,000 third-party S60 on Symbian OS applications commercially available. The current S60 on Symbian OS applications will be compatible with S60-based TD-SCDMA devices, offering enriched experiences to China's TD-SCDMA users," said a Nokia press release.
Giles called the Symbian platform "an engine for open innovation in the mobile ecosystem and a driver of mobile and Internet convergence".
The TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance expects 12 million TD-SCDMA subscribers by 2012.
