Android now at 550,000 activations per day; 400 devices worldwide

Looks like Android’s still going strong. Just a few weeks after the announcement that 500,000 Android devices were being activated per day, Google’s CEO Larry Page announced that they’d now moved to 550,000. Not bad, Google. Not bad at all.

That’s not all that was announced either. Apparently, in addition to an ungodly number of new devices activated, there are now over 400 Android device models worldwide, and over one hundred thirty five million Android subscribers. Want a bit of perspective on just how mind-blowingly large that number is? Facebook has around two hundred million users. The united states has around four hundred million people living in it.

So…yeah. Big number. Obscenely big.

Unfortunately, while Android is completely crushing Apple in terms of market share at this point; Apple still comes out the clear winner in terms of apps; with four hundred twenty five thousand apps downloaded and fifteen billion apps available  to the Android market’s two hundred fifty thousand and six billion. Anyone wanna start taking bets on how long that lead’s going to last? As more and more people begin moving over to Android, more and more devs are going to start making apps for Android. Really, it’s only a matter of time, unless Apple somehow manages to pull ahead.

As for all the other mobile platforms…none of them really factor in right now, particularly not RIM, who’ve been continuing their steady downward spiral.
