Samsung Updates Their Smartphone Naming Scheme

So apparently Samsung’s decided to start organizing their smartphone products into tiers.  Confused as to what that means? I’ll elaborate a bit.

First up, let’s have a bit of a history lesson. Samsung is, in addition to being responsible for the flexible AMOLED screens (which are downright bloody awesome, by the way), responsible for one of the best known-and best selling- Android devices on the market. I am, of course, referring to the Galaxy S series. Now, the unfortunate thing about the Galaxy S is that while it was a rather excellent and high-end device, it was also a little…pricey. Not everyone could afford such a price, so as a result Samsung understandably began pumping out mid to low-price point models for consumers from all walks of life.

Unfortunately, it was there that they ended up running into another problem- at least, by their perception. See, their portfolio’s gotten a little…bloated and disorganized over the last year. They seem to be looking to remedy that, making it easier for customers to determine what phone fits into what price range- and what price range is best suited for their needs as a customer .

Each product of Samsung’s-new and old- will be placed into a specific category; each category tailored to a particular market. Phones like the Galaxy R/Galaxy S series will be in the premium range. The Galaxy W will fit into the high end range, and the mid-level phones will include the Galaxy M. Finally, entry-level will host phones like the Galaxy Y. Apparently, one thing Samsung still needs to work on is its naming conventions.

Taking things a step further, a Premium Plus phone will feature improved premiun devices, a “Pro” device will classify keyboard phones, and LTE will refer to…well, I should hope you at least know that.

At the very least, one thing this’ll do is make it easier for customers to find a new phone that fits their needs- which is probably precisely what Samsung’s going for.
