Oct 28 SFR Launched HSPA MIDs Working on Linux
Published by Chris in:Linux, Microsoft, Apple, Android, RIM, Palm,
A French operator, SFR, has released two Linux-based Mobile Internet Devices which are both ready to take you places via a fast HSPA 3G connection. While these aren’t exactly phones, they might as well be. The SFR M! PC Pocket 3G+ (in the picture) and the Archos 3G+ are the MID I am talking about. The devices will get you an Intel Atom processor, 4GB of integrated memory and touchscreen LCDs. Why not turn them in phones if they’re as smart?
We’ve seen numerous MID before which were all running on Windows Mobile. Well most of them anyway. But this is a whole new approach and a new direction here. Carriers will opt for the Android OS or the free Linux variations if they have the opportunity.
Should Windows Mobile be afraid? Is Microsoft paying attention to what’s happening lately? Are they going to speed up work on the future Windows Mobile 7? Besides Linux we have Apple, Android and Open Symbian around the corner. Microsoft should take action to keep intact its share of the market. We haven’t forgotten RIM or Palm neither! The mobile world will be more animated than ever in the near future!
