John Garcia, Head of CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) at Sprint Nextel, is leaving the company, and the circumstances surrounding his departure have not been made public. Keith Cowan, president of strategy and corporate development, will serve as interim head for the unit, which controls 70% of Sprint's customer base, until the position is permanently filled.
Sprint was already facing serious troubles, having a poor third quarter, lagging far behind competitors AT&T and Verizon. However, Garcia's departure should not come as a surprise; Sprint has had some serious changes in upper management in the past year, with a new CEO, Marketing Chieft, and Head of Sales and Distribution in that time.
