China Mobile is reportedly developing a Google Android-based operating system for TD-SCDMA mobile phones.
Citing a source from China Mobile, Interfax reports that the move confirms analysts' views that the company now aims to claim a larger stake in the mobile Internet market.
Interfax reports that the the Android-based system will be called OMS (Open Mobile System) and will integrate China Mobile's own apps designed to work for the TD-SCDMA network platform.
The OMS-based phones will be called Ophones, says the Interfax report, and may mimic the iPhone's interface and functions.
Interfax also reports that Lenovo Mobile will manufacture the Ophones for China Mobile.
China Mobile is considered the world largest mobile telephony company.
