Singapore telco Starhub has launched the world's first commercial 3G femtocell service.
The femtocell is a portable cellular access device that connects a user’s 3G mobile phone directly to a Starhub router at home to enable user to make voice and video calls and send SMS over StarHub’s cable network.
The service will cost a monthly fee of US$10.62 which entitles a user to free local outgoing voice, video calls and SMS free made through the ‘Home Zone’ femtocell, said a PCWorld report.
However, Starhub will charge users for MMS, IDD calls, mobile downloads, mobile surfing and other GPRS activities.
Under the new service, up to four StarHub mobile users can call out simultaneously over a single ‘Home Zone’ connection.
Each Home Zone account can support up to four StarHub mobile phone numbers.
