Remember the Nokia Internet Tablets? Those Ultra Mobile PCs that are small, compact with a 4 inch screen of pure lust and beauty, and at the heart of it all is the Linux OS Maemo. The Tablets are only for a niche market maybe that's why the Maemo community is so small and available applications are nothing to write home about but that doesn't mean it's not striving.
Ukko Lappalainen, vice president at Nokia's markets unit in an interview with Reuters, all but confirmed a Nokia high end phone that will feature Maemo Linux at the helm, Ukko told Reuters that "in the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones." He didn't end there; Ukko went as far as taking a swipe at Google Android by saying "I don't see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo."
Strong words, but I believe Maemo will dwindle under the Android onslaught, the Android community is growing rapidly and manufactures are already planning on gushing out phones come next year, Nokia should just keep Maemo for the Tablets. In just a few short months, Android applications has risen over the 200+ applications available for the N800 and N810 Tablet, that alone proves where this is headed, development on Android is easy compared to Maemo so it's a done deal.
Nevertheless, I'm still interested to see how Nokia will try and make this happen so keep it lock on MobileTopSoft as more information will definitely pass us by.
