Blackberry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has reported a quarterly net profit of $396.3 million, up by about seven percent compared to the same third quarter period of 2007.

RIM revenue went up to $2.78 billion, up 66 percent from 2007. Blackberry subscribers also increased, with RIM reporting 2.6 million new Blackberry subscribers.

About 6.7 million Blackberries were shipped in the third quarter of 2008.

Among the units RIM launched in the third quarter was the Blackberry Storm, its first touch-screen smartphone, and a new version of the Blackberry Pearl.

Apparently, RIM has not been badly hit by the ongoing worldwide economic crisis and by challenges from rivals Symbian and Apple.
