Despite the cultish iPhone following, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has stated that close to 5 million smartphones running on Windows Mobile were shipped during the third quarter of 2008. Apple only shipped 4.4 million iPhone 3G units in Q3.
However, can Windows Mobile keep up it's lead? Considering the recent reveal of Palm's Pre and the growing Android market, I'd have to say probably not. There are so many platform choices in mobile these days that Microsoft will really have to hustle in order to keep up the good work.
