Well that's all history right now and Google Maps has now support for GPS on Verizon BlackBerry Storms. And for those of you using the Storm in any networks Google Maps should have been working fine from the beginning and getting along with that GPS chip just fine.
Google has launched an updated version of Google Maps for BlackBerry which supports GPS. Furthermore it includes Latitude too so you can go wild with your GPS now. Unfortunately the current release isn't a major Google Maps release as its main purpose is to fix the Verizon Storm problem.
