Last week it was the Android application Locale which took center stage in the Skyhook drive for GPS Location Based Service world domination. Now another has joined the fray and it seems what I have said about the trend continuing is becoming reality in every sense of the word. OK, let's talk about this application that has found things easier by incorporating Skyhook, it's called What's That? and yes the question mark is apart of the title, how strange is that?
Anyway, What's That? is a Google Android application which uses geolocation services powered by,SkyHook Wireless, combined with the,GeoNames, geological database,Wikipedia, and,Google Local, to bring you information about what it is you're looking at, answering the question, "What's That?" This application is highly useful if you are someone who travels allot and can't be damned to ask the local people questions about famous landmarks or mountains like Everest. All this would not have been accurately possible without Skyhook Wireless technology being at the helm of the Google Android application What's That?
"Getting accurate, fast location is extremely important to users of this app, because they are typically travelers in new cities, and unaware of their surroundings," said Chris King, CEO of Fuzzy Squirrel Software and developers of What's That?. "The Android location API returns location too slowly and too inaccurately to support my app. I really needed Skyhook Wireless to fill the gap that Android leaves in location."
Chris King hit the nail right on the head about the inaccuracy of the Android location API, and if you think Mr. King and I are alone about this then you seriously need to take a look at this New York Times article. So now Skyhook Wireless has made airwaves and is becoming very popular among developers, I wonder what is next for the Boston based company.
