Rambus announced they made a breakthrough in Memory power efficiency with their latest test vehicle developed through its Mobile Memory Initiative (MMI). Low battery life is probably the single greatest problem with smartphones today so anything that helps in that regard is always welcome. The power efficiency gained from Rambus new tech is 2.2mW/Gbps, this is nearly a one third improvement over the initial MMI silicon and significantly better than the estimated 10mW/Gbps of an LPDDR2 400 memory controller.

The performance demands of next-generation mobile devices are vastly outstripping the pace of battery technology improvements," said Martin Scott, senior vice president of Research and Technology Development at Rambus. "With the innovations developed through our Mobile Memory Initiative, we can deliver advanced applications and maintain long battery life through our breakthroughs in both bandwidth performance and power efficiency.

With all this Rambus hopes to smartphones will deliver advance applications while maintaining low battery usage, so the future is looking bright then? I hope to be alive when smartphone users can get hours up on hours of Internet usage on their handsets without the need of constant charging, the future is mobile and we need more hours to make it better.
