We've gone so many years without having a Universal Charging Solution for our mobile phones because all those manufacturers out there have tried to make an extra buck by changing charger types over the years. And what happened with all those chargers over the years? They have been turned into more and more waste!
The good news is that carriers and manufacturers out there have come to realize the need of a universal charger. The MicroUSB has been proposed and it looks like more and more people like it. The charger has been accepted by the UN through its International Telecommunications Union since such a solution is the answer for lowering the average yearly e-waste. It won't make Earth a better place all of a sudden, but if waste can be prevented, why shouldn't we switch to universal chargers?
The CTIA also happens to stand behind a unified charging solution so we're expecting every manufacturer and carrier to accept MicroUSB in the near future. It's being estimated that by 2012 we well the universal charging standard fully deployed. What do you think?

"It’s being estimated that by 2012 we well the universal charging standard fully deployed. What do you think?" I think that until that day it's essential to recycle properly the mountains of chargers trashed away every year. If you know of good recycling programs of this kind please let me know because I would like to link to them from this post I wrote about the new charger standard: http://stop.zona-m.net/node/27 TIA, Marco
