Microsoft has published an extensive whitepaper that explains how to take advantage of the new multimedia features of Windows Mobile 5.0 when developing enterprise applications. Windows Mobile 5.0's multimedia APIs (application programming interfaces) allow developers to embed camera, picture, and video functionality directly into applications, according to the article.

It also includes a number of new multimedia APIs. Microsoft DirectShow provides developers with greater control and flexibility in capture and playback of video and audio streams. Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 Mobile enables developers to integrate media player functionality into their applications, including library management and playback. Microsoft DirectDraw provides developers with greater control and flexibility in rendering high-speed two-dimensional graphics. Microsoft Direct3D enables developers to deliver rich three-dimensional gaming environments, and this API is also available from managed code.

Author Christian Forsberg begins by walking readers through the inspection business process, pointing out that most of the work in the field is based on data recorded by hand on paper, resulting in a potential for data errors and loss. And even though photos may be taken, historically their quality wasn't apparent until they came back from processing, Forsberg notes.
