Parrot, global innovator in Bluetooth(R) technology for the automotive market, has developed another worldwide industry first with the new 3400 LS-GPS kit. Used in conjunction with a Smartphone or a PDA with mapping software, the Parrot 3400LS-GPS enables a full navigation system in your vehicle, combining a Bluetooth(R) hands-free kit with a color LCD screen and GPS antenna.
The 3400 LS-GPS kit has been awarded by CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) as an Innovations 2006 Design and Engineering Showcase Honoree in the Vehicle/Mobile Electronics category. It's the second year in a row that CEA has recognized Parrot's leadership in development of products using Bluetooth(R) technology with an Innovations honor.
Parrot's 3400 LS-GPS is "always on" and constantly sends the vehicle's position to your Smartphone or PDA. It's compatible with most navigation software, including Navigon, Route 66, Tom Tom, gate5, CoPILOT and Wayfinder. Audio directions are easily heard through the vehicle's speakers. The kit is designed to be compatible with Bluetooth-enabled Smartphones or PDAs so that the consumer can easily synchronize the kit with their exiting mobile handset and carrier. The easy-to-read color screen displays your phonebook information, and provides caller ID by phone number, name and even photos of images entered into your phonebook.
Once the 3400 LS-GPS is installed, simply position your Smartphone or PDA in its cradle, start the engine and you're connected instantly and wirelessly. You can make calls, take calls and access the phone book through voice recognition and voice activation features that allow you to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes focused on the road, while being able to glance easily at your GPS screen.
The new Parrot 3400 LS-GPS joins a broad line-up of plug-and-play and professionally installed car kits from Parrot, including EASY-DRIVE (Plug & Play), CK3000 EVOLUTION (with trimline keypad), CK3100 (with LCD), 3200 LS-COLOR (with color LCD for Photo Caller ID) and the new Parrot RHYTHM N' BLUE auto stereo with integrated Bluetooth phone function. Socket Communications has announced a CompactFlash Wireless LAN card for Windows Mobile 2003/SE & 5.0 Mobile based devices that supports the 54 Mbps 802.11g standard. The "Go Wi-Fi! P500" is a sibling of the 802.11b "Go Wi-Fi! E500"The P500 supports an automatic power saving mode that balances battery life and throughput speed, according to Socket. An LED on the card shows WLAN connection status. The device supports "enterprise class robust security" including AES, WPA2-Enterprise, and CCX v1/v2 (certification pending).
Socket points out the 802.11g standard is backward compatible to 802.11b, allowing an 802.11g card such as the P500 to talk to an 802.11b access point, and vice versa.
The P500 is supplied with Socket's Wi-Fi Companion software utility that enables users to connect to Wi-Fi networks with "three simple clicks," according to the company. Wi-Fi Companion finds available networks and performs advanced features such as network ping and trace route functions. An SDK is available to help third party developers create and integrate specialized Wi-Fi applications.
The Go Wi-Fi! P500 is expected to be available in early February 2006, priced around $100.

Sometimes it takes a little modding to get something to work the way you want it to. Other times, it takes a lot of modding to get a device working to your stringent specifications. This was the case for Aximsite "rookie" kryten007, who wanted a Bluetooth controller for his PDA but was unhappy with the fit of the only commercial model available, the GamePad.
"While not a big console gamer, i am a fan of the way Sony designed their Playstation controllers. With that in mind, i decided to take the innards of the BT gamepad and put them in a modified PS controller. I was extremely lucky in acquiring the controller. i wanted a black one (like the PS2's), but also one with out the analog sticks (PS1 only). Ebay said there was no such thing, so i was prepared to compromise. When i went to the local GameStop, however, two minutes of searching yielded exactly what i wanted--and for only $3!" Said kryten007.
Instead of modding the GamePad itself, kryten007 ripped the guts out and inserted them into a hollowed-out $3 Playstation controller. After a bit of wiring hassle (something about the GamePad lacking a "common ground") he was able to make everything work properly and attach it to his Axim x50 using modified, spring-loaded mechanical pencils. The end result may not look all that pretty, but no one is grading these projects on aesthetics, right?
In the future the creator is planinng to:
1) angling the axim back a bit
2) replacing the pencils with something better (brass tubing, perhaps)
3) increasing the amount it stretches a bit for landscape use (i had intended this since "v1.0", but a measurement error left it short this time)
4) Do something about the flagrant hot-gluing
