We have many comments recently targeted on one question - How to install CAB files on Pocket PC? I am writing this simple guide with the idea to help you installing and using all those great applications you will ever want.

First of all you need to find and download the program you want to install. I will use an application called PDAStatus, which shows the status of your device on today screen. When the download process is complete you need to copy the CAB file and paste it somewhere on your device, I personally recommend to do this at the Storage Card. Note that some applications are zipped so you need to unarchive them to have the CAB file. Now you need to open pocket pc's File Explorer, located into the Programs. Browse the storage card or the location you used to copy the CAB. When you select and run it, a windows will appear, which asks you to Choose a location to install the program. It can be your Device or the Storage Card, so select your choice and click below on Install. The process after that is fully automated and after the installation is complete it will show you confirmation screen.

This is all you need to do to install CAB files to your Windows Mobile Pocket PC device. Below is video on which you can see how I installed PDAStatus on my HTC TyTN.

Feb 28 Enhance your Windows Mobile Smartphone with text message preview

Since now the text messages you receive can only be previewed on Pocket PCs (Touchscreens) not Smartphones. But now there is a solution for this and I am happy to present it to you. It is called SMS Bubbles and brings to the world of Windows Mobile Smartphones feature that their "big brother", Pocket PC, has by default - text message preview in bubble.

SMSBubbles displays incoming text message or delivery receipt in a "bubble". If text of message contains a phone number SMSBubbles tries to find matching contact from the phone's contact list and according to the settings replaces the number by composed contact string. All phone numbers in a bubble are shown as links, so it is possible to activate them and then make a call to the linked phone number.

Not only stylus operation but also key operation is available. Although the look & feel closely matches the theme color and make the 3D gradation, its CPU and memory usage are quite low !

Sep 26 Managing ActiveSync profiles made easy

Managing the ActiveSync profiles can sometimes be crucial, the ActiveSync itself has just a few options to manage its profiles. Some Windows Mobile developers and other testers use more than one device with their ActiveSync and that cause some misunderstandings between the device and the sync computer. Here comes this little app called ASPaPro Utility r2, ASync PaPro Util stands for ActiveSync Partnership and Profiles Utility. It is a very simple Windows XP utility (SP2, English language) to:
1. Delete all ActiveSync partnership and profiles
2. Invoke creation of new partnership name
3. Backup existing profile

This is something you don't use on a daily basis but me thinks one might need this at some point in time, in situations like ActiveSync partnership and profiles has gone berserk that you have to create a new partnership. The new version r2 of the ASPaPro has some great new features like creating restore points, loading them at any time etc. This could be very helpful if you are in a situation of having you computer crashed down and loosing all your sync profiles.

Of course there are other options like the ActiveTweak which is designed for Windows PC running ActiveSync. It allows you to do some things Microsoft never intended. Some the ActiveTweak features:
* Set yourself up as a guest partner and never have it prompt you again
* Remove those installs you accidentally clicked on that will be run on the next activesync connection
* Stop the Application Manager from popping up every time you cradle your device.
* Delete Partnerships without having to wipe out activesync and reinstall.
* Change the communication timeouts on the sync. Slow Computer? No longer a problem!

Activetweak 1.3 adds the following functions:
* Auto-open the explore my device window
* Shutdown the ActicveSync Processes running on the PC, even if the device is connected
* Restart Activesync
* Remove ActiveSync from the Windows startup, so it does not load when Windows does.



Having those applications installed at your computer makes you ActiveSync more powerful and reliable which on the other side make you Windows Mobile device experience more secure and stable.

Aug 27 Install CAB files directly from your PC

Most of the Windows Mobile softwares comes in executable file which could be double clicked and installed directly, but some of the applications just come in a CAB file which should be copyed to the device and installed from there. This copying could be a little complicated for a person not so aware of software installing and such. Here comes some new solutions for this problem. The first one is called CABviaActiveSync. This great freeware applications adds an option to your Windows Explorer context menu labeled "CABviaActiveSync". After having CABviaActiveSync installed at your system you will be able to just right click a .CAB file and select "CABviaActiveSync" from the dropdown menu to have it copied and installed at your device. Pretty useful ah ?



The second option i would like to show was originally created for Windows Mobile Smartphones only but i think it should be working at all the Windows Mobile devices. It's called Sp Cab File Kit and its a little more advanced than the "CABviaActiveSync". "Sp Cab File Kit" supported extensions are standard Smartphone CAB, setup INF, at setup XML. You can analyze, extract or just install a .CAB file by just right clicking on it. here you can check out a demo video of how "Sp Cab File Kit" could be used.



Both options are useful but i recommend "CABviaActiveSync" for beginners and "Sp Cab File Kit" for more advanced developer users.

Jul 17 Quick transfer of PIM stuff to other Windows Mobile devices WITHOUT Outlook or Exchange

Transfering contacts or calendar items from one Windows Mobile device to another is and issue that concerns most of the handhelds owners when upgrading to new device. With devices running operating systems prior to WM5 this was an easy job (you just brought up the built-in keyboard SIP and tapped Ctl, and, then, A, to select all contacts and mass-transfer all this via both infrared and Bluetooth to any other device). But the WM5 ha sputted this situation in other direction. It has no option of mass-select any kind of PIM data for transfer unless you use a PIM extender like Pocket Informant. But there is also a new way to do this i have just read about in Werner Ruotsalainen article for pocketpcmag.com.

It is based on the free application PIM Backup and even if it is your second time using Windows Mobile application you will have no problem dealing with it. Here you can read complete post Menneisyys wrote about this issue and learn how to do it.
