If you plan to buy a new feature phone from AT&T, which basically means either a Quick Messaging phone or a Touch phone, you will have to get a mandatory messaging plan along with your handset purchase. In case you happen to own one of these phones then you won't have to worry about the whole thing as the new requirement is in place for new purchases only.

Are we going to see Alltel get bought out by Verizon soon or not? I'd say that for now Alltel are doing pretty good and they hardly look like preparing for any mergers. They are upgrading their EVDO network support and they are upgrading their My Circle plans. These don't seem to be actions done by a company on the verge of being both by a rival.
