Software giant Microsoft has started a discussion with Nokia last week about plans to have the handset maker add Windows Mobile-powered devices to its portfolio. Practically all Nokia phones currently run the Symbian operating system and such a move would be a major change for the industry leader.
At the moment Windows Mobile currently only has just over 6% of the smartphone operating system market compared to more than 70% for Symbian. However, it is gaining acceptance among smartphone manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung that have released Windows Mobile based handsets offering similar features to the Apple iPhone which runs a mobile version of Mac OS X.
Now it is too early to say that Nokia will be making Windows Mobile phones any time soon but keep in mind that Nokia internally was running Windows CE (with use of Platform Builder tool) on some of their phones - for testing purposes, and secondly: such move would be wise particularly in the huge American market, where Symbian is not particularly popular, but Nokia phones powered by Windows Mobile would certainly sell there well.
I hope that more news on this issues will emerge soon.

ACCESS CO has just released Palm OS Garnet VM in beta and it will now work on Nokia tablets (the N810, N800 and the N770). This is part of the company strategy to revive the Palm operating system by bringing it to larger audience which Nokia devices has.
Palm OS Garnet VM is free download labelled "beta", and has the cool option to be installed alongside the pre-installed Linux-based OS and run when needed. This operating system may be very useful for Nokia tablet owners with its ability to run 30,000+ Palm OS applications, with about 10,000 freewares of them, which you can download from Freeware Palm site.

Symbian Limited just welcomed the launch of three new Nokia devices based on S60 3rd Edition and Symbian OS v9.2.
These phones are
Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8GB and Nokia N95 8GB.

One of the latest Smartphones from Nokia, the N76, was introduced as their first Symbian S60 folder phone more than a year ago. Thanks to Nokia Hong Kong, the guys at MobileBurn had the chance to check out the final production model of the N76 before it's widely available and make a review of it. It's sleek and with the usual smartness of S60 powered devices, but has only a 700mAh battery, and a hiss on music playback and a 3.5mm audio jack location that fouls the flip lid ane little strange, but read the review and decide for yourself.
The Nokia N76 looks great on paper, but of course is not perfect in real life. Apart from the HTC Star Trek (Qtek 8500/Dopod S300) which is quite outdated by now, this device does not have any direct competition in the thin smartphone department. Apart from a few design glitches such as the earphone jack that gets in the way with the flip and the poor battery life, the N76 seems to deliver what is has promised. It is sleek and powerful.
Its ergonomics aren't the best and there are a number of places in the software that we hope to see improvements in, including the lack of consistency with settings organization and the instability of cover display UI. The background hissing noise heard when playing music is something that I think really needs to be solved first.
You'll find sample photos shot with the Nokia N76 on the following page.

Nokia N77 is one of the latest annouced mobile phones powered by Symbian S60 operating system. Maybe the main feature of this smartphone is the built in DVB-H for mobile television viewing. But there is one main thing you must consider - running DVB-H straight will dry your battery life in a matter of 6 to hours doing nothing else. So I can describe Nokia N77 like a lightweight version of the high end mobile TV phones such as the Nokia N92.
Nokia N77 features:
* Active matrix 2.4inch QVGA color display with wide viewing angle: 320 x 240 pixels, up to 16 million colors
* Active standby with main services always on top
* Active toolbar interface in camera and gallery
* Ambient light detector - used to optimize display brightness and power consumption
* Five -way navikey, two soft keys, application key, clear key, send and end keys, operator service keys, ITU-T keypad
* Dedicated key for mobile tv
* Dedicated key for camera
* Multimedia key provides direct access to predefined applications
* Volume/zoom key
* Operating system: S60 software on Symbian OS
* User Interface: S60 3rd Edition

DVB-H mobile TV just got smaller and more affordable, with Nokia's candy bar Nokia N77, announced today at 3GSM. See below for the full press release and photos. There's a dedicated TV key on the handset, many TV-related services and utilities, plus the usual Nseries goodness.
Stylish and affordable Nokia N77 to accelerate DVB-H mobile TV mainstream adoption
Nokia today introduced the Nokia N77 multimedia computer offering an optimized mobile TV experience in a compelling and compact form factor with complete Nokia Nseries functionalities. With the Nokia N77, the latest integrated DVB-H device in the Nokia Nseries range, operators now have greater choice of devices as they further develop their broadcast mobile TV platform to launch and attract more subscribers. The Nokia N77 enables living room TV as viewers have come to know and understand, but is now available in a small and beautifully designed package to take on the go.
TV is the biggest media in the world and we are mobilizing it with the Nokia N77. The pocketable and affordable Nokia N77 further drives broadcast mobile TV based on DVB-H technology towards the mainstream market phase. The ability to watch live television on a mobile device has never been so easy, said Jonas Geust, head of Nokia Nseries Players Category, Multimedia, Nokia. The wide 2.4 inch flat screen with up to 16 million colors and high quality stereo sound makes it the ideal personal mobile device for enjoying live TV and music on the move.
With the Nokia N77, we are expecting an increase in the take-up of broadcast mobile TV service in Vietnam, said Mr Le Doan Quan, Director of VTCmobile Televison Company. Nokia now gives subscribers more choice in the type of device they would like to own when applying for the broadcast mobile TV services in Vietnam. In 2006, Vietnam became the first country in Asia Pacific to roll-out broadcast mobile TV services based on DVB-H. The service is operated by the VTCmobile Television Company, one of the leading multimedia corporations in Vietnam.
