Apple has indeed launched its much-hyped tablet, the iPad. The device looks and acts like a bigger iPhone and although it was rumored to run iPhone OS 4.0 the device is only running a custom iPad-only version of iPhone OS 3.2.

What will the iPad offer you? A 9.7-inch LED backlit display, a proprietary A4 1GHz chip, from 16 to 64GB SSD, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity via micro SIM cards and lots of content. Features like Flash support and multitouch are still not there so iPhone users too will have to wait a while for Apple to enable them. Other rumored features of the iPad are currently missing: no OLED display and no front-facing and back cameras. But it's just the first iPad version so Apple has plenty of time to fix things.

Good news Apple fans, it looks like Cupertino will launch a new iPhone OS version in just a week from now. iPhone OS 4.0 has been in the works for a while now but it hasn't been revealed in order for consumers not to find in it any details that could suggest future tablet functionalities.

From the start we will have to tell you that the new OS is only available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users while those of you that own an "old" iPhone 2G should consider maybe getting a newer Apple handset.

You might not be aware of the fact that Archos, a well known name in the tablet business also wants to become an active player in the mobile business. The company already has a device ready to be sold in stores but it would seem that the Archos Phone Tablet is not ready for the public yet.

Archos' CEO said that the company has already built the device and it's going to offer you lots of impressive features: 1GHz ARM processor, Android OS, 4.3-inch touchscreen, 3.5G support, 10mm titanium casing, front-facing cameras and some "strong multimedia capabilities."

While Windows Mobile 7 is yet to appear officially it looks like the competitors are getting ready for an imminent release of iPhone OS 4.0. Not confirmed by Cupertino yet, iPhone OS 4.0 has been mentioned by app developers which have apparently started to make apps capable of running on the new mobile OS.

And we also have an explanation as to why Apple hasn't launched any iPhone OS updates anymore. It seems that version 4.0 contains various references to the upcoming tablet. Apple surely didn't want to reveal any of the functionalities of its most recent product so it's understandable why one would choose to postpone the launch of iPhone OS 4.0.

Tablets are going to fill our lives from now on. We will end up having to play with both a tablet and a smartphone at the same time. And we'll still have some time to deal with our laptops too. Just days ago we've shown you Dell's upcoming tablet which has been inspired probably by the much expected Apple tablet.

Apple's own creation will probably be a best seller. The device is set to arrive later this month and rumors say that it's basically an iPhone on Steroids.
