Aug 28 Enabling A2DP bluetooth pairing for Windows Mobile devices

Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) basically allows your phone to send audio over bluetooth at a normal frequency, letting you listen to your facourite music over the air. You can play music on Windows Media Player on your phone and listen to it at your bluetooth headphones. Unfortunately some Windows Mobile 5 devices do not have A2DP built in. In this case you need to install this simple app called zoA2DP. With this little freeware you will be able to pair your bluetooth stereo headphones and listen away in wireless bliss.



Take note, that when you pair your headphones, be sure to check Wireless Stereo. This is the new capability that is added with A2DP.



Notice the music note icon in the titlebar indicating that A2DP is enabled. This will only come on if a wireless stereo device has been paired.

Jan 06 Encoding Divx/mpg Movies for Playback on Pocket PC Device

This is a recipe for all of those pocket pc owners out there. This recipe explains how to use virtualdub to encode divx or avi files for playback on a pocket pc device. We will be glad if we help You with this guide to watch your favorite movies and video clips on your handheld ppc. Directions and Requirements: Pocket PC Device, Pocket MVP (music video player, formerly pocket divx), VirtualDub 1.4.9 or higher, Divx 5.0 Codec installed (http://www.divx.com, and a MP3 Codec installed (ie lame, nimocodec set)

This recipe assumes the following:

1 You have an mpg or avi file of the movie/video you want to encode
2 You have Divx 5.0 or higher codec installed
3 You have virtualdub installed
4 You have an MP3 codec installed

Step 1.
Open VirtualDub and then open your movie file (avi, mpg or divx avi). First, go to Video under the menu and click Full Processing Mode.

Step 2.
Once you have your video file opened. We need to re-encode the video and audio with a lower bitrate and to make it playback smoothly on a PDA.
First go to the Video Filters. We will want to resize and rotate our video so it plays in landscape mode on your pda. Click the Add button, then choose the Resize filter. We want our image to be 320x240 or for slower PDAs 208x160 (depending on the aspect ratio, just look at the preview to see if it looks ok or not). Also, we want to add a rotate filter, rotate (left 90 degrees). Then Click OK

Step 3.
Next, go to the menu, Video > Framerate and change the settings to this:
Source rate adjustment : No Change (current 29.970 fps)
Frame rate decimation : Process every other frame (decimate by 2)
Inverse telecine (3:2 pulldown removal) : None (progressive)

Step 4.
Then go to Video > Color Depth and change the settings as such:
Decompression format : 16-bit (HiColor/32K)
Output format to compressor/display : 24-bit (Truecolor/16M)

Step 5.
Next, go to the menu, Video > Compression. Select the DIVX 5.0.2 codec and click the Configure button.

-On the DivX Codec, change Variable bitrate mode to 1-pass and encoding bitrate to 300 kbps (you can tweak this to your device, but for now lets use this number)

Leave the rest of the settings as is except MAKE SURE that the Psychovisual Enhancements are NOT CHECKED. Then click OK.

Step 6.
Next, we need to edit the Audio settings. Go to the menu, under Audio, and make sure that Full processing mode is checked.

Then go to Audio > Conversion, change Sampling Rate to: 22050Hz and leave the rest as is and click OK

Go to Audio > Compression. You will need to have a MP3 codec installed. Once you do, use settings similar to this:
40kBit/s, 22,050 Hz. Stereo 5kb/s

Remember that we changed the sampling rate to 22,050Hz so we need to use a bitrate that uses the same one. Then click OK.

Step 7.
Now just go to File > Save as Avi and save your new movie/video. Let virtualdub finish, then copy the program over to your PDA and play it with Pocket MVP. Then just tweak the divx bitrates and audio bitrates so it runs smoothly on your pda.

Sep 28 Enhance your Pocket PC with XScaleMonitor utility

XScaleMonitor v1.0 is a just released free utility for Pocket PC devices that continuosly shows Processor speed, Processor usage, Battery charge, Current consumption, Free memory and Memory percentage used.

This application displays in three small lines in the bottom of the Pocket PC's screen. The first one shows the instantaneous processor use percentage, and it's colour shows the speed at what it is running in hundreds of MHz. The second One shows the battery charge state, and it's colour the current consumption in hundreds of mA. The third one shows the free memory percentage from the one assigned to run programs, and it's colour the number of 8MB free blocks.

Dec 12 Enhance Your Windows Mobile clipboard functionalities with free tool

Windows Mobile default clipboard by default is not so rich in functions like the one used in desktop Windows systems. That is why you can install Clipboard Tool application to your Pocket PC and enhance the existing Windows Mobile Clipboard with this utility.

In short what Clipboard Tool makes is organizing the clipboard as a stack: every time you copy something, this is added to the stack. Once you want to paste something, just open Clipboard tool and select it from the stack. It has also additional features like the Links view, which allows you to filter out of the stack only the weblinks, and the Filter view, which adds Regular Expressions support, allowing you to make complex searches over your Clipboard Stack. In addition, you can choose to export the whole content of the clipboard to a Text file for later use.

Since now the text messages you receive can only be previewed on Pocket PCs (Touchscreens) not Smartphones. But now there is a solution for this and I am happy to present it to you. It is called SMS Bubbles and brings to the world of Windows Mobile Smartphones feature that their "big brother", Pocket PC, has by default - text message preview in bubble.

SMSBubbles displays incoming text message or delivery receipt in a "bubble". If text of message contains a phone number SMSBubbles tries to find matching contact from the phone's contact list and according to the settings replaces the number by composed contact string. All phone numbers in a bubble are shown as links, so it is possible to activate them and then make a call to the linked phone number.
