Feb 08 Dell to launch gaming Pocket PC handheld in future?
Found in: Devices, Pocket PC, UMPC, Games, Mobile News, Dell to launch gaming Pocket PC handheld in future?

There are rumors these days that Dell is working on a gaming-oriented handheld console (probably Pocket PC but maybe a mini UMPC), although details are thin on the ground. This new future coming mini-gaming machine more likely to resemble UMPC than PSP. All this can be true because a senior Dell executive has admitted the company could look to make a gaming handheld in future.

Global gaming chief Abizar Vakharia was speaking at Dell's European Innovation event in Marbella. There, Dell had earlier launched the XPS 710 H2C top-line gaming PC. When he was asked about a future gaming handheld, Vakharia looked serious as he said: You know, that's definitely one that's on the radar screen, but we have no plans to talk about anything today.

After last year's acquisition of Alienware, Dell has made no secret of its desire to grow share in the gaming space and any such handheld would be almost certainly a great product. It is likely this gaming handheld to be Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) style device because of Dell's close connections with Intel and Microsoft.

It will be a great delight if Dell release a Windows Mobile based gaming device, since although the X51v is fantastic.

Apr 11 How to Optimize Applications for UMPC? Sudoku example
Found in: Tips, Mobile News, UMPC, FCC Approves the Samsung Q1 UMPC

Now when Ultra Mobile PC devices like Samsung Q1 UMPC and Medion MDPEA 1000 UMPC are hitting the market there will be a new need - Applications Optimised to work perfectly on UMPC devices. Today my attention was taken by an article from Microsoft called Microsoft Sudoku: Optimizing UMPC Applications for Touch and Ink. In this article Stephen Toub discusses Sudoku and demonstrates how to build an application to solve puzzles, generate puzzles, and enable enhanced game play for ultra-mobile PC and Tablet PC.

A year ago in a small cafe in the West Village in New York City, I was introduced to a pen-and-pencil puzzle game with which my friend Luke was entirely captivated. Lively conversation with our significant others saved me from falling into the same trap, but it was only a short reprieve. A few months later in July of 2005, I again found myself confronted by Sudoku while visiting my brother and my former college roommate in London. This time, it was everywhere. And there was no escape. I was enthralled, addicted, and borderline obsessed. As is the case for many developers, today's passions frequently become tomorrow's development projects, and so it took little more than the flight back to the United States for me to have the first version of my C# Sudoku implementation up and running. sais Stephen Toub.

But I wasn't satisfied. Something was missing. There was something thrilling about setting the logically discovered numbers crisply onto the paper with my pen or pencil, a property that was lost in the game's translation into Windows Forms. And that's when it hit me. Sudoku is the quintessential application for a Tablet PC. After downloading the Tablet PC SDK to my computer the next day, I soon transformed this keyboard-and-mouse powered game into one that is completely pen-driven.

This article closely examines Tablet PC and UMPC-based implementation of Sudoku. The article details the algorithmic aspects of implementing a Sudoku game, in addition to the specific details that help you implement other applications designed for Tablet PC and UMPC, so i can strongly recommend it to those of you who develop software and their future thoughts are focused in developing UMPC Friendly applications.
