he Plus! Sync & Go software was a really interesting application, and in fact it pre-dates the birth of podcasting. Unfortunately, it was a great idea held back by poor marketing decisions and a proprietary attitude. The only way you could get the client software was to buy the Plus! pack, which didn't have a lot to offer beyond Photo Story. And even then, Microsoft never opened up the gates to allow third party content to get pushed down onto the devices. If this was done right from the beginning, Microsoft would have had a good two year jump on every other podcasting/enclosure-pulling software solution out there. SYNC, SYNC, SYNC... thats the only thing keeping thousands of users from using Thunderbird and Sunbird. Even in Sunbird's rudimentary stages, if there was some sort of sync capability for Pocket PC can you imagine the number of users who would make the switch. I switched to FireFox almost 2 years ago and never looked back- it's beta versions trounced IE. Sunbird/THunderbird will never be a viable alternative to Outlook (not Express) without sync capability.
Alot of people are has been looking for some kind of sync option, but unfortunately there isnt a complete one yet. Of course there are some tryouts like the FinchSync application.
FinchSync is a tool for synchronizing contacts, appointments and tasks from Mozilla email and calendar products with a Pocket PC.
Contacts are synchronized with the email client's address book. The build-in clients of the Netscape- and Mozilla Application Suite are supported as well as the standalone Mozilla Thunderbird.
Contact's and tasks are synchronized with the Mozilla Calendar extension for the Mozilla Suite, Firefox and Netscape or the standalone Sunbird (Version 0.2). Features
The PC part of FinchSync is written in pure Java and runs on every platform supported by the Mozilla Project like Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
The Pocket PC part is written in C#, using the .NET Compact Framework. The application will run on all Pocket PCs with .NET installed no need to worry about different processors and OS versions.
ActiveSync is not needed (and not available for Mac OS or Linux anyway), but the Pocket PC must be able to connect to the PC via TCP/IP. This can be done using a WLAN connection for example. If this requirement is fulfilled, synchronization can be done from everywhere using the internet. The HTTP protocol is used for the communication between PC and Pocket PC. This should work even in firewall-protected environments.
FinchSync is designed to manage contacts, appointments and tasks from different sources and keeps them separated. This means, that private items synchronized at home will not mix up with items synchronized in your office.
FinchSync has a user-management. Different users may sync with different sources on your PC. Users may be restricted to read-only access. For example, a user may by allowed to sync with a companies' address book, but not to upload changes.
However, there are some other services that could help you sync with Mozilla Calendar (yes, the old one), and Sync4J's synchronization extension (available on www.sync4j.org)
The only think you'll need is a Sync4J server running 24/7 on the internet, and a SyncML client (there is one for PocketPC, SmartPhone, etc... on their website).
It works well. I only hope they'll be a Sunbird 0.3 extension soon.
If you can't setup a Sync4J server online, either you can use the sync4j public server (see the mailing list), either you can set up a "temporary" server on your PC, that will be launched when synchronizing with the pocket pc. Go to the download section of their website, there is an already configured package.
It's all good but not enough to satisfy the needs of all that millions of thunderbird users. And here comes the question why didnt mozilla developers write and simple extension for ppc syncing ?
May be they would say - "Hey, we have started it already ! Check this out http://pocketpcsync.mozdev.org/"
Looks great but unfortunately there is no progress of this project since December last year. I'm subscribed to their mailing list but nothing is about to come soon :(

Pocket PCs are designed to sync e-mail on a Windows PC with Microsoft Outlook, an application that ships with all Pocket PCs. Microsoft Outlook can be set up on a Windows PC to check one or more e-mail accounts. When Outlook downloads new e-mail messages from a server, those messages are synced with a Pocket PC during the next synchronization via ActiveSync.
AOL users do have an option for syncing their AOL e-mail with their Pocket PC, however. The solution is a third-party software plug-in called OneMail. With OneMail, you can set ActiveSync to download AOL e-mail from a particular screenname and sync it with your Pocket PC.
To get started, you must first download OneMail and install it on your Windows PC.
After OneMail is installed, sync your Pocket PC with your PC via ActiveSync. Allow the synchronization process to complete. Once fully synced, use the toolbar in ActiveSync on your Windows PC and select Options > Settings. In the "Settings" menu, make sure that the box to the left of "OneMail" is checked.
Now, disconnect your Pocket PC from its connection to your Windows PC and reconnect. Now, upon syncing, you'll get a setup screen on your PC to configure OneMail to connect with your AOL account.
Enter your AOL Screenname and password and click "OK."
Your AOL e-mail from the screenname you selected will sync with your Pocket PC each time you connect with ActiveSync.
You can access this mail on your Pocket PC by opening the Messaging application. On the top left-hand side of the Messaging screen, tap "Inbox" and select "AOLMail."

You are in need to organize Your contacts, notes, to-do lists and appointments. If You keep your data in more than one Microsoft Outlook folder -- perhaps separate personal and business calendars or separate address books for each project. Your problem is that PDAs typically cannot synchronize multiple calendars, contact lists or other Outlook folders. It only synchronizes one of each.
Chapura solves the problem with its PocketMirror Professional software. PocketMirror extends the synchronization capabilities to multiple Outlook folders so you can carry all your data with you -- even if it's in multiple places.
PocketMirror works with either Windows Mobile or Palm OS, so you can use it with almost any device on the market, including Hewlett Packard's iPAQ or Palm's Treo, Zire or Tungsten models. It also works on a stand-alone PDA or on a combination PDA/cell phone, or Smartphone, allowing you to dial from the multiple address books.
When you synchronize your lists, they actually get synchronized to a single folder (calendar, contacts, etc.) on your PDA. But they also have additional information embedded within the record, allowing you to view the data as if it were still separate.
This gives you the benefit of multiple listings without the risk of using a nonstandard personal information manager on your PDA. PocketMirror simply uses software tricks to piggyback on the existing technology.
It takes a couple minutes to install and set up your new synchronization settings, and then you're ready to go. The biggest drawback to PocketMirror is that it takes longer to synchronize than it does without it. I suspect the additional time is caused by the additional data that it has to compare and synchronize.

Open-Xchange, Inc. today announced a significant extension -- releasing a SyncML OXtender free through March into the core product, Open-Xchange Server. Users of the popular open source collaboration server can now seamlessly connect and interface with most mobile devices.
SyncML is the open standard that drives data mobility by establishing a common language for communications between devices, applications and networks. The foundation of the SyncML open standard ensures a consistent set of data that is always available on any device or application, at any time. To participate in the SyncML OXtender technology preview, customers can go to
"As networking of devices continues to flourish, so does the demand for universal solutions for synchronization," said Frank Hoberg, CEO, Open-Xchange. "Until now, synchronization of data has been restricted to certain devices and applications. SyncML is becoming the cross-platform standard -- solving compatibility issues. Support for it in Open-Xchange Server means users do not have to spend a lot of time and money on the installation and configuration of all the different applications and devices now required for data synchronization."
Open-Xchange Server Empowers Mobile Healthcare Workers
Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, a 7,000-employee university hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, chose Open-Xchange Server as its future collaboration platform largely because of its mobile capabilities. Today and in the near future, personal digital assistants (PDA) and smartphones - the fusion of telephone, calendar, address book, text receiver and sender - will help to organize the increasingly-complex hospital routines in a smooth and efficient way.
"For hospital staff overall availability and 'reachability' is a must," said Rene Patthey, hospital CIO. "In addition to the stability and performance of our 5000 workstations, the connectivity of an increasing number of users with mobile devices became important. The hospital staff already uses 560 Palm PDA's models M515, T2 and T3, following a strong growth trend.
"With Open-Xchange we enjoy a strong customer orientation of the provider and a close proximity to product development which is very unique," said Patthey. "An outstanding example was the development of PDA's and Smartphone's connectivity via the standardized SyncML interface. We were integrated in early development and test phases and were able to discuss our needs. Accordingly the results met our requirements in an unparalleled way. With Open-Xchange Server we were able to avoid additional and costly custom development that would have been necessary with alternative solutions."
About SyncML
The foundation of the SyncML open standard ensures a consistent set of data that is always available on any device or application, any time. Sponsored by Sony Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, Symbian, Palm and others, the SyncML initiative accelerates the development and market success of SyncML technologies.

Early Termination Fees have always been a hassle for customers, especially if they choose to end their service early due to network issues with their provider, or simply because they are moving to an area in which service is not ideal. T-Mobile will soon be helping circumvent some of the pain their customers feel by offering a new prorated fee structure, a move that will not eliminate, but will definitely reduce some of the ETF pain felt by customers.
