Mar 13 Tatung announced the Tatung M1A Smartphone at CeBIT
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Mobile News, Devices, Smartphone, Tatung announced the Tatung M1A Smartphone at CeBIT

During the CeBIT 2006, Tatung, another Taiwanese manufacture of Windows Mobile devices, unveiled its Tatung M1A, the follower of the Tatung M1 Windows Mobile Smartphone. Nevertheless, the M1A, the follower of the M1, got some important feature-updates which makes the device even better, and IMHO the M1 was a nice device already.

First of all, Tatung redesigned the keyboard since the M1 keyboard was hard to use. Another upgrade to the Tatung M1A Smartphone is the QVGA color screen instead of the initial 176x220 pixel screen plus 64 MB additional RAM which gives it 128 MB RAM now. The camera was updated too and now it is 2.1 megapixel, most likely released with a photo light. Like the forerunner, the M1A is also a quadband GSM and GPRS device.
Keep in mind that Tatung is a pure ODM for Windows Mobile Smartphones, therefore you will never see devices, sold under the brand name Tatung but only under operators or resellers brand names.

The estimated retail price is 249 Euro since Tatung's target is to be cheaper than HTC and the planned world wide availability was announced for Q3 2006.

Mar 13 gSmart Phone from Gigabyte review
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Mobile News, Pocket PC, Reviews, gSmart Phone from Gigabyte review

Gigabyte's gSmart is one fantastic little Pocket PC phone that has a built-in TV tuner! This device is already preinstalled (and will be released) with the full Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU2, which includes the Microsoft Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) for "direct e-mail push" and features such as "remote wiping" and "policy enforcement" from your Exchange 2003 SP2 server, and the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) for streaming stereo audio over to your compatible Bluetooth headset.

Since the gSmart is currently a Tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM phone, it may put off some Cingular customers in the United States who rely on the 850MHz band.

Nice option is that when you insert your SIM card and boot up the device the Today plug-in instantly accesses the wireless functions and shows your current cellular network.

Again, I will note that the gSmart test device I received directly from Gigabyte did not contain the final version of the firmware, so there are likely a few more changes to be implemented and bug-fixes to be resolved. I can't even be sure that the battery supplied with it has been conditioned or used extensively to honestly gauge the true, expected battery life. However, the device as a whole performed like a champ, and would definitely be one to look out for. One feature not shown here in this overview is an optional menu system/program launcher called "3D MMI." It was removed from the ROM and is now provided as a separate, optional install off the accompanying CD-ROM.
sais Raphael Salgado from pocketpcthoughts.com .

The gSmart is a force to be reckoned with. Even though Gigabyte may be new to the mobile device market, I will admit that they have easily "schooled" the veteran ODMs/OEMs who think that providing basic hardware and software is enough. The designers of the gSmart were definitely thinking "outside the box" even before they were putting the goodies inside the box. They deserve much praise for their hard work and implementation, while the hardware engineers and designers came up with a strong product for multimedia and portabilty lovers alike.

Full review of this device can be found here.

Mar 13 Moonfighter from Astraware reviewed
Published by root in:Games, Palm, Treo, Pocket PC, Reviews, Moonfighter from Astraware reviewed

Moon Fighter is a challenging new title developed by Pazzazz Games and published by Astraware. This welcome release fills a void not only in the company’s catalog but in the Palm and Pocket PC games market in general. Harkening back to classics like Lunar Lander or Gravitar, Moonfighter takes classic gravity-oriented gameplay and adds Asteroids-style rotating shoot ‘em up action.

In addition to these exercises in booster rocket physics, you must contend with increasing numbers of enemies. The earliest levels feature only gun turrets but subsequent areas offer flying saucer gunships, mechanical spiders and forcefields. I noticed that some of the enemies are very aggressive in attacking your ship while others merely fire only when you are in immediate proximity. Your craft is limited to a single weapon that cannot be upgraded or fired rapidly. A tiny radar screen is thankfully provided in the upper left corner of the screen.

While the initial stages are nearly devoid of enemies, things begin getting nasty by the sixth or seventh level of each difficulty level. Simultaneously having your shields at 10%, four enemies onscreen and the cavern floor just a few pixels away makes for some sweaty palms indeed (pun intended)! Unfortunately, unless you are a die-hard shooter aficionado, most players will be like me and probably begin to tire of the game before they can plumb its upper difficulty levels. This simplistic charm that makes the game so accessible also proves to be its downfall. I found the sweet spot to be ~10 to 12 levels in on each difficulty level. Those stages proved challenging enough to give some serious gaming goodness during a lunch break but not difficult enough to make me want to smash my TX! I actually found myself playing the random “Infinite Moons” levels after playing through the training tutorial but prior to playing straight through the insanely difficult Veteran & Ace levels.
