Today Microsoft released its new Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP systems as a free public Beta. The new Media Player should be a ground breaking development for Microsoft to better compete with Apples iTunes player since it also includes - by default - Microsoft's partnership music store URGE, which is maintained by MTV.
When designing Windows Media Player 11, we looked at the needs of a wide range of users from people who are just getting started with digital media to discriminating audiophiles with very large collections on their PCs. By incorporating this feedback into the design process, we made some significant changes to the Player to deliver a simpler, more visual way to navigate music, video, and other digital media and further improve the overall experience. said from Microsoft.
New Windows Media Player 11 has some new interesting improvements among:
Streamlining and shortcuts -To simplify the Windows Media Player interface, the classic menus are now turned off by default, but still accessible by right-clicking anywhere on the Player's frame.
Fast access to settings - Right-click or click the down arrow that is assigned to each activity tab (Now Playing, Library, Rip, Burn, and Sync) to reveal menu options that are relevant to each respective tab. This new feature offers quick access to the most common Player settings.
Universal back and forward buttons - Navigating Windows Media Player is now easier than ever with back and forward buttons located in the top-left corner. Simply flip back and forth between the various screens to retrace your steps or get back to a previous task.
Revamped playback controls - The new playback controls are easier to find and use and feature improved repeat, shuffle, and full-screen options.
Status area - With just one click, you can change the look of the area in the lower-left corner of the Player to a thumbnail view of an equalizer, album art, or playback status.
While the size of the installation file nearly doubled (23,449 KB vs. 11,638 KB) the new Media Player provides simplicity in design, which brings a whole new look to your digital entertainment plus a not counted amount of new features.

This announcement makes Ilium Software the first major PDA software developer to embrace the new UMPC platform.
The UMPC is a natural evolution for users seeking a comprehensive mobile experience, stated Marc Tassin, Senior Product Manager for Ilium Software. Were very excited about the prospects for this new platform.
The UMPC, also known as Origami, was announced by Microsoft in March 2006. Ilium Software is working directly with Microsoft to bring UMPC compatible versions of their software to the consumer.
Ilium Software has been producing handheld and mobile software since 1997. Several of their titles ( eWallet, ListPro, NewsBreak ) are mobile platform best-sellers, as well as having won multiple industry awards. The UMPC platform has been the focus of a great deal of speculation and attention in the both the PDA and Windows communities, but the decision by Ilium Software to pursue the UMPC platform may provide an indication of the future direction of the mobile market.

Few days ago at MEDC 2006 Microsoft has announced the release of Windows CE 6, and today they are announcing another major thing - Microsoft .NET Micro Framework!
Using only a few hundred kilobytes of RAM and an inexpensive processor, the Microsoft .NET Micro Framework platform allows developers to build applications for the smallest of devices. These devices are typically constrained by cost, memory, processor, and/or power consumption. This platform is currently used in Smart Watches for MSN Direct, and is planned for Windows Vista SideShow displays, as well as an upcoming version
of Microsoft TV Foundation Edition.
Microsoft first publicly announced its Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) initiative more than three years ago with the introduction of the MSN Direct Smart Watch, which uses the .NET Micro Framework Platform. This work required a reasonably rich graphical application support on a very inexpensive and power-efficient hardware, but did not require all the features of the existing Microsoft platforms like Microsoft Windows CE. The result is the .NET Micro Framework. The .NET Micro Framework is a natural extension of our embedded offerings and provides an easy-to-use solution for developers.
Though it is used on very small devices, the .NET Micro Framework is a managed code environment bringing the efficiency and reliability to the embedded space that managed code provides. In addition, the platform is fully integrated with the Microsoft Visual Studio, allowing for development using familiar tools even when debugging code running on the target device. In this way, the .NET Micro Framework extends the Microsoft embedded story to a new set of smaller devices.
If you want to know more information about Microsoft .NET Micro Framework fill out the form on this page.
