Dec 17 New Skype Beta with WM 5.0 better low power CPU support
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Software, New Skype Beta with WM 5.0 better low power CPU support

Skype recently released two new Skype clients for the Pocket PC: Skype for Pocket PC Beta version 1.2.0.89 and Skype for Pocket PC low CPU Beta version 1.2.0.91. As you can see, v1.2.0.91 is especially designed for Pocket PCs with less then 400 MHz but Skype still recommends the use of an external W-LAN card if used with Pocket PCs with 300 MHz CPUs. However, I wonder what happens if the new version is used with TI OMAP 850 powered Pocket PCs which have 200 MHz only (like the HTC Wizard, Charmer and Prophet). Have to test it over the weekend.

Anyway, another improvement for both version is the full Windows Mobile 5.0 support including improved landscape mode support and support for 240x240 and 480x480 screens! Also new is the automatic language selection depending on regional settings of the device and support for the the new call forwarding feature.

As always, you can download the latest Skype versions from Skype.com or Mobiletopsoft.com

Dec 17 Free Web Voice Messaging System via Skype by ORB
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Mobile News, voice, Free Web Voice Messaging System via Skype by ORB

While we are talking about Skype and Skype voicemails, there is a (free) and way more convenient and powerful way to use Skype as you voicemail system; I've posted about back in August already. All you need is Orb (which I'm a huge fan of) and Orb's V4S plug-in. However, Orb has updated V4S again with another cool feature: send voice messages to any E-Mail or Skype contact!Orb Networks yesterday announced a new version of V4S, the world's first software for free Web voice messaging, enabling users to send voice messages to any email or Skype contact.

From any Web browser (or directly form the Skype interface), V4S users can now easily create and send voice messages for free to all their friends, wherever they are. V4S voice messages can be played back from any device with a streaming audio player, including mobile phones and PDAs.

"Voice messaging fills the gap between real-time voice conversations and text-based messaging solutions," said Ian McCarthy, vice president of product marketing at Orb Networks, the creators of V4S. "Sometimes you just want to send someone a message in your own voice." McCarthyalso said "Orb continues to help consumers get the most out of their digital and broadband investments," .

Thanks to E-Mail and SMS alerts, users of V4S get their friends' voice messages delivered to them right away, wherever they are.V4S is the latest addition to the Orb platform, which gives users access from everywhere to their television, music, photos, and other digital content. To use Orb and Skype together with V4S you need a "always connected" PC an free Orb account, the Orb software, running on your always on PC, a Skype account , the latest Skype client software running on your always on PC as well and the V4S plug-in for Orb and Skype.

Dec 17 Installing Pocket PC Software to a Flash Memory Card
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Tips, Installing Pocket PC Software to a Flash Memory Card

Installing software to your Pocket PC's SD or CF card is easy and can be good solution if you you pocketpc has less internal memory than your flashcard. First, download the desired Pocket PC software installation file to your Windows PC and establish a link with your Pocket PC via ActiveSync. Allow the synchronization process to complete and run the installation program.

Your Pocket PC's internal memory is limited and cannot be easily upgraded. Installing software to Secure Digital (SD) or CompactFlash (CF) flash memory cards allows you limitless expansion without taking up your Pocket PC's internal storage.

When the ActiveSync Add/Remove Programs screen appears, uncheck the Install program into the default installation folder box:

Then click OK. A second window will appear offering you the choice of installation destinations:

Select the destination you desire (in this example "Storage Card") and click OK. The program will install to the indicated flash memory card.
Obviously, when a program is installed to flash memory card, removing the card will make the program inaccessible.

Dec 17 Synchronize AOL E-Mail with Your Pocket PC handheld
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Tips, Synchronize AOL E-Mail with Your Pocket PC handheld

Pocket PCs are designed to sync e-mail on a Windows PC with Microsoft Outlook, an application that ships with all Pocket PCs. Microsoft Outlook can be set up on a Windows PC to check one or more e-mail accounts. When Outlook downloads new e-mail messages from a server, those messages are synced with a Pocket PC during the next synchronization via ActiveSync.

AOL users do have an option for syncing their AOL e-mail with their Pocket PC, however. The solution is a third-party software plug-in called OneMail. With OneMail, you can set ActiveSync to download AOL e-mail from a particular screenname and sync it with your Pocket PC.

To get started, you must first download OneMail and install it on your Windows PC.

After OneMail is installed, sync your Pocket PC with your PC via ActiveSync. Allow the synchronization process to complete. Once fully synced, use the toolbar in ActiveSync on your Windows PC and select Options > Settings. In the "Settings" menu, make sure that the box to the left of "OneMail" is checked.

Now, disconnect your Pocket PC from its connection to your Windows PC and reconnect. Now, upon syncing, you'll get a setup screen on your PC to configure OneMail to connect with your AOL account.

Enter your AOL Screenname and password and click "OK."
Your AOL e-mail from the screenname you selected will sync with your Pocket PC each time you connect with ActiveSync.

You can access this mail on your Pocket PC by opening the Messaging application. On the top left-hand side of the Messaging screen, tap "Inbox" and select "AOLMail."

Get your copy of OneMail .

Dec 17 How to Move Files From Pocket PC to Desktop Windows PC
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Tips, How to Move Files From Pocket PC to Desktop Windows PC

With Pocket PC / Windows Mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint in addition to a wealth of third-party multimedia and productivity applications, it's often necessary to move something you've created or edited on your Pocket PC to your Windows desktop or laptop PC. Moving files from your Pocket PC to your Windows PC is easy. Just follow the steps below.

1. Sync your Pocket PC with your Windows PC via ActiveSync. When syncing is complete, click the "Explore" button on your Windows PC ActiveSync.

2. The Explore view allows you to browse, on your Windows PC, the files stored on your Pocket PC. Locate the file(s) on your Pocket PC you wish to copy. In this tutorial, the file being transferred is a Word Mobile Document labeled "Word Document 123."

3. When you've located the file you want to copy in the Explore window, right-click on the file with your mouse and select Copy (shown above). Leaving the Explore window open, navigate to your Windows Desktop. Right-click on a blank space on the Desktop and select Paste (shown below).

4. The file has been copied from your Pocket PC to your Windows PC and can now be moved, edited, e-mailed, etc., at will. You could also use the Cut function, rather than the Copy function shown in Step 3, if you wanted to delete the file from the Pocket PC and move it to the Windows PC. Using the Copy function will leave a copy of the file in the Pocket PC's memory.

While the method of moving files from Pocket PC to Windows PC shown in this tutorial works well, there are certainly other ways of accomplishing the task. You can drag-and-drop files, move files with flash memory cards, transfer files over a wireless network, etc. This method is simply the most straight-forward.

If you would like instructions on other ways of moving files between Pocket and Windows PCs, comment this post and let us know.

If your device does not have access to a mobile phone network, insert a modem card.
* Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
* In either My ISP or My Work Network, tap Manage existing connections.
* Select the desired modem connection, tap Edit, and follow the instructions in the connection wizard.
* To view Help information for any screen in the wizard or while changing settings, tap the question icon.

Set up proxy server settings
If you are connected to your ISP or private network during synchronization, your device should download proper proxy settings during synchronization from your PC. If these settings are not on your PC or need to be changed, ask your ISP or network administrator for the proxy server name, server type, port, type of Socks protocol used, and your user name and password before you begin.
* Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
* If a proxy server has not been set up, tap Set up my proxy server. Otherwise, tap Edit my proxy server, select the desired proxy server, and tap Settings.
* Select the This network connects to the Internet and This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet check boxes.
* In the Proxy server box, enter the proxy server name.
* To change such settings as port number or proxy server type, tap Advanced and change desired settings.

Set up VPN server connections

* The server to which you are connecting does not use dynamically-assigned addresses, and you need to enter your TCP/IP settings.
* You need to change server DNS or WINS settings.

Use Dialing Rules
Additional numbers may need to be dialed depending on your given location when connecting. For example, if you want to dial from work, a 9 prefix must often be dialed, or an area code is needed.
To avoid creating a new modem connection for every environment, set dialing rules for the locations from which you connect often. Three dialing locations, Home, Mobile, and Work, have been created for you, and you can create more. If a connection cannot be made, your device will give you an opportunity to change the dialing location.
* Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
* Tap Connections > Advanced tab > Dialing Rules.
* Tap Use dialing rules.
* Select a location.
o Home - Dials the number as a local call without a 9 prefix.
o Mobile - Dials the number as a long distance call without the 9 prefix.
o Work - Dials the number as local call with the 9 prefix.

Change connection group name
Your device is already set up with two groups of connection settings: My ISP and My Work Network. You can change the name of these groups to something more meaningful for you. For example, if you put all of your corporate settings under My Work Network connections, you can change the name from My Work Network to your company's name.
* Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
* Under My ISP or My Work Network, tap Manage existing connections.
* Tap the General tab.
* Enter a name for the settings group.

Set up an automatic choice for connections
If you have already created more than one connection, you can set up your device to connect to the best available connection automatically.
* Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
* Under My ISP or My Work Network, tap Manage existing connections.
* Tap the Auto pick.

Dec 17 Mobile Power Pack by Socket
Published by Vesselin Nerdeff in:Accessories, Mobile Power Pack by Socket

Although most of us can usually recharge our handhelds and smartphones simply by plugging them into the nearest power socket, there are many situations where this isn't possible.I don't know about you, but I hate being without my favorite device, even when I'm out in the woods. It can be mighty hard to charge up your handheld in the middle of a national park. That's where Socket's Mobile Power Pack comes in. It can recharge any device that's capable of taking in power through its USB port.

I recently went on a trip and used the Mobile Power Pack as my sole source of power for my handheld. I used Palm's LifeDrive as this is a notorious power hog. Odds are your experience will be even better than what I've described here. In the week I was gone, the Power Pack was able to completely recharge this handheld multiple times.

I got at least three full charges out of it. It's hard to be exact because there were times while I was recharging the LifeDrive while I was using it. Still, it was was all I needed for light use of the device during the entire trip. Of course, because it was using the USB port, the Mobile Power Pack recharged the LifeDrive somewhat slowly. Typically I plugged the handheld in at night, and it would be fully charged in the morning.

I did check one time and the device had gone from being essentially out of power to fully charged in about three hours. The recharge time would be even faster if I was using a device that has a barrel charging jack.

Not too long ago I went to an all-day conference. I needed to use my LifeDrive frequently, and I knew its battery wasn't up to the task. So, whenever I wasn't using the handheld, I kept it plugged into the Mobile Power Pack. This allowed me to make heavy use of the LifeDrive without worrying about running out of power. In sessions that went from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon, I very frequently used WiFi to check my email and surf the Web. Without the Mobile Power Pack, I'd have drained the LifeDrive's battery before lunch. But with it was able to keep using my handheld all day. I couldn't have used the LifeDrive for the whole nine hours, but I was able to use it far more than I otherwise would.

At $150, I can't describe Socket's Mobile Power Pack as a "must have" accessory for everyone. But if you often find yourself away from an electrical socket for extended periods, then it sure could come in handy.
