VoiceEngine Mobile latest version for Symbian 9 and Windows Mobile 5.0

VoiceEngine Mobile latest version for Symbian 9 and Windows Mobile 5.0"Global IP Sound is aware of the challenges that developers of VoIP applications for smartphones and PDAs face," said Roar Hagen, Founder and CTO of Global IP Sound. "Our new releases focus on these challenges by handling the most common problems found in mobile devices such as background noise and echo. We are also constantly striving to provide our customers with the most up to date products by offering VoiceEngine Mobile on the broadest array of platforms possible."

The latest VoiceEngine Mobile for Pocket PC also incorporates GIPS VQE, which includes noise suppression and automatic gain control (ACG) to maximize the quality of VoIP conversations by reducing echo and background noise while adjusting speech levels to create a consistent and comfortable listening experience for mobile users. It also features support for the Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP), as well as the latest version of GIPS NetEQ, which is an advanced jitter buffer and packet loss concealment module that dramatically improves sound quality and minimizes latency in IP telephony systems. This is in addition to existing features such as support for push-to-talk and wideband audio.

VoiceEngine Mobile now runs on the newest generation of Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms and to give OEMs everything they need to extend the mobility of their end users, and to improve usability and voice quality compared to previous generation products. It supports Symbian 7/8 and Windows Mobile 2003/04 for Pocket PC platforms.

The success of VoIP in the business and consumer marketplace will largely be driven by the availability of VoIP wireless handsets, analysts say. By 2009, over 66 million cellular/WiFi handsets will be in operation, according to a forecast from In-Stat, a market research firm based in Scottsdale, Ariz. Consumer VoIP subscribers using wireless IP phones will grow from 2 percent worldwide today to 73 percent by 2009, the firm adds.

Dial your SIM Card entries with your Pocket PC Phone Edition

Dial your SIM Card entries with your Pocket PC Phone EditionDo you have lots of contacts stored on the SIM card which might be different from your Pocket Outlook contacts? Pocket PC Phone Edition gives you the opportunity to call this contacts, right from the dial pad. This is done by a typical GSM code integration which is also supported by Pocket PC Phone Edition and works with the o2 xda, T-Mobile MDA/Phone Edition as well as with the HP Jornada 928 WDA. "All" you need to know is where your contacts are stored on your SIM card.

Preparation

  • First open the "SIM Manager" and check the phonebook entries like in this o2 xda example

Usage

  • No open the Phone Edition Dial Pad and enter the index number where your contact is stored on your SIM card followed by a "#"
  • A bubble appears which will ask you if you want to dial the number you've selected
  • The number will be dialed and you will be connected
  • See here how it looks on your Pocket PC Phone Edition

Thats it; with this workaround you can access all your SIM card contacts with just three taps.

Use USSD Codes on your Pocket Pc to Diverting Voice Calls

Use USSD Codes on your Pocket Pc to Diverting Voice CallsIf you use call diverting often but don't want to go through the Pocket PC Phone Edition or Smartphone 2002 menu, you can also use the USSD short codes. This feature is available since the first GSM networks were launched and the phone menu doesn't do anything different than sending these codes. However, this gives you a faster access to your settings and in addition it offers you one feature which isn't available through most mobile phone menus (defining after which time a call should be forwarded if you don't reply).

Please remember that this information is stored on the GSM network, not on your GSM device. So doesn't matter if you change your SIM card to another terminal, the settings are stored as long as you don't change it.

USSD codes works in the same way on all networks and GSM phone. USSD codes always looks like:

  • Activate: *USSD_Code# @

  • Deactivate: #USSD_Code # @

  • Delete: ##USSD_Code # @

  • Check Status: *#USSD_Code# @

USSD_Code = the feature code the mobile phone should send to the network

@ = Send (green) phone button

Configuring Call Diverts

Divert all Calls (21)

All your incoming calls will be forwarded, doesn't matter if your phone is switched on or not. The USSD
code is "21".

  • Forwarding: **21*DESTINATION_NUMBER# @

  • Activate: *21# @

  • Deactivate: #21# @

  • Delete: ##21# @

  • Check Status: *#21# @

Divert if no Reply (61)

All the incoming calls will be forwarded if not taken within a defined time. The USSD code is "61".

  • Forwarding: **61*DESTINATION_NUMBER# @

  • Activate: *61# @

  • Deactivate: #61# @

  • Delete: ##61# @

  • Check Status: *#61# @

In addition you can tell the network after which time the call should be diverted. Here the GSM specifications
define a time between 5 to 30 seconds:

  • Forwarding: **61*DESTINATION_NUMBER*DELAY# @

The DELAY time can be 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds.

Divert if Unavailable (62)

All the incoming calls will be forwarded if the phone is switched off or out of network coverage. The USSD
code is "62".

  • Forwarding: **62*DESTINATION_NUMBER# @

  • Activate: *62# @

  • Deactivate: #62# @

  • Delete: ##62# @

  • Check Status: *#62# @

Divert if Busy (67)

All the incoming calls will be forwarded if another call is in progress. The USSD code is "67".

  • Forwarding: **67*DESTINATION_NUMBER# @

  • Activate: *67# @

  • Deactivate: #67# @

  • Delete: ##67# @

  • Check Status: *#67# @

All Conditional Diverts (004)

You can also activate, switch on/off, check or delete all conditional forwards (61, 62 and 67) with just
one USSD code. The USSD code is "004".

  • Forwarding: **004*DESTINATION_NUMBER# @

  • Activate: *004# @

  • Deactivate: #004# @

  • Delete: ##004# @

  • Check Status: *#004# @

This USSD code deactivates all call forwardings with one single command. The USSD code is "002"

  • ##002# @

Please note that using the unconditional "Divert all Calls (21)" overwrites all conditional call forwarding!

Sniffing the network with pocketWiNc and HP iPAQ H5400

Sniffing the network with pocketWiNc and HP iPAQ H5400As well as making it easy to connect to WiFi networks, WiNc provides client-side support for Cironds WiLan Manager and also helps network administrators inspect, manage and tune WiFi networks for optimum performance. WiNc is based on Cironds Universal Client technology, is available for Pocket PC 2002 and CE.Net, and is compatible with the 80211.a, 802.11b, and 80211.g standards.

Cirond Technologies released pocketWiNc for Pocket PC 2002 which also works with the HP iPAQ H5400 now, if you don't forget to modify your iPAQ Registry.

pocketWiNc automatically detects WiFi networks and lets you rapidly determine whether you can access the Internet. Once you are connected, download e-mail or browse the web with just a tap on the screen!

Features:

  • Supports all major PC card, Compact Flash cards, and Pocket PCs with on-board WiFi adapters.

  • Automatic detection of Internet availability.

  • Instant ad-hoc network set-up anywhere, anytime, to enable connection to other Pocket PCs and laptops using WiNc, for exchanging files and wireless Pocket PC synchronization.

  • One-touch start-up for Web browser and e-mail inbox.

  • Supports portrait and landscape screen modes.

  • Preferred Network profiles to enable automatic connection to frequently used WiFi networks based on a user-defined priority sequence with automatic WEP key configuration.

  • Automatic detection of all available WiFi network details including SSID, BSSID, channel, MAC address, signal strength and WEP details, route tracing and ping features - for mobile network diagnosis.

  • Manual release and renew IP address feature.

  • Automatic client-side Support for WiLan Manager.

  • Simplifies support by enabling all WiFi cards in an enterprise to be supported with a single client solution

Because an error in the iPAQ H5400 Registry, WiNc will not detect a network card as long as you don't fix this value by yourself:

The original value which can be found under "HKLMCommvntminiLinkageRoute" contains for any reason this garbage:

You need to change the "Route" value to "vnetmini1":

Please note that even with the latest iPAQ H5400 W-LAN Driver Update, this bug isn't fixed; so you need to do it by hand under any circumstances. After you changed the Registry, don't forget to soft reset your device.

From now you can use your H5400 as a perfect WiFi sniffing gadget but please don't abuse it.

Enjoy the wireless freedom. If you need a Registry Editor, I suggest the PHM Registry Editor (free). pocketWiNc is available for free from Cirond Technologies.

Thanks to my fellow MPVs Giorgio Cifani for pointing me to pocketWiNc and David Hettel for reminding me to modify the Registry!

i-mate JAM Smartphone

i-mate JAM SmartphoneThe i-mate Jam is the smallest integrated Windows Mobile PDA and phone you can put in your hands.Combination handheld/phone devices are becoming ever more common, and the trick with such 'convergence' devices is to get the right mix of features for whichever segment of the buying public is being targeted, and make them all easily accessible.

This great handheld device is available in two versions

i-mate JAM 64MB Smartphone

416 MHz Intel xScale processor, 64 MB of RAM, Bluetooth, a 1 megapixel camera, and a 240 x 320 color touch screen.

i-mate JAM 128MB Smartphone

416 MHz Intel xScale processor, 128 MB of RAM, Bluetooth, a 1 megapixel camera, and a 240 x 320 color touch screen.

At just .72 inches thick, the Jam fits into a pocket with ease, and its minimalist design is sure to turn heads. It's also easy to use, thanks to a simple control layout which offers quick access to your Outlook calendar, contacts, and key phone functions.Phone edition devices from O2 (the xda II at 7cm by 13cm by 1.9cm and 190g) and HP (the h6340 at 7.5cm by 11.9cm by 1.87cm, 190g). It matches Orange's new Windows Smartphone, the SPV C500 for depth, although the C500 is marginally thinner, a fair bit narrower and weighs just 100g. The other comparable device is Sony Ericsson's P910i:as with the C500, the P910i's dimensions are very close, although it's thicker (2.6cm versus 1.81cm), and weighs 155g. The other handheld/phone combo worth mentioning at this point is PalmOne's new Treo 650, which we expect to see early next year. The i-mate JAM should interest anyone looking for portability. Clearly, if the rest of our review stacks up, any of the convergence devices mentioned above could face competition.

The Jam's TFT display supports up to 65,000 colors and the Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC operating system is completely touchscreen-enabled. The screen also features advanced handwriting recognition that is compatible with all of the device's applications. The rear of the Jam houses the camera and there's a standard stereo 2.5mm headset jack, while USB data and charging is handled by docking ports on the bottom of the device.

Many of the Jam's calling features are integrated with the Windows Mobile operating system. The included Pocket Outlook software has a contacts list that is combined with the phone's dialing functions. The phone's handwriting recognition software can be used to dial numbers and enter contact information. The Jam's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are available, as is a vibrating alert. Custom ringtones, as well as a picture ID system are also supported.

The i-mate JAM's small size makes it easy to hold in one hand and prod at with the thumb -- ideal for making voice calls one-handed. It's also far less of a chore to hold this device to the ear for voice calls than it is with some larger Pocket PC/phone combos -- and you feel less of an idiot doing so.

Battery life is impressive. Our usual MP3 looping test, in which we leave the screen always on, but turn off Bluetooth and the GSM/GPRS radio, delivered 5 hours and 13 minutes of continuous music and overall life of 6 hours and 9 minutes. We have been able to live with this pretty comfortably during the test period, although daily charges via the mini-USB sync/charge connector have been required. Power can be delivered via the mains or a notebook PC, helping to minimise the amount of cabling you need to carry.

Using the Jam's integrated media functions, you can store MP3 files and easily exchange them with your PC. The included Windows Media Player application can also play videos for even more mobile entertainment. You can also use the Jam's megapixel camera to capture photos, or videos in MPEG4 format. Gaming on the device is also fully supported.

The Jam is designed as a complete mobile office solution, so Internet and messaging capabilities are robust. The unit comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and email functions. Microsoft's ActiveSync software keeps the device synced with all of your PC's Outlook information via USB, IR, or Bluetooth connection. Users who want Internet connectivity on the road with their laptop or PDA can tap the Jam's wireless modem capabilities. In addition to Outlook/Exchange Server email connectivity, the Jam also supports POP3, IMAP4 and BlackBerry email protocols. The unit fully supports basic text messaging, as well as multimedia messaging (MMS).
