Spb Software House has released Spb AirIslands, a new Pocket PC game based on a unique concept, combining real-time strategy game where you have to build a colony on an isolated island, and a set of mini-games. The 3 included mini-games are used to earn resources you can use later to develop your island. This unique concept allows Spb AirIslands to combine all the benefits of a desktop strategy game with all necessary attributes of a fun Pocket PC game.

It takes the player into a unique world of an isolated island with its own history, rules, success strategy and story line. And, at the same time, you can always play one of the three mini-games when you have 5-10 minutes of spare time (for example standing in a line), thus earning resources for the big game. Your task is not only to survive on an island, but to colonize, build, and develop it, taking into account different factors that influence the hard colonist's life. Build Your Island


The old world was ruined by a disaster. It is now a pack of isolated islands floating in the sky. You join the army of heroes who revive the world. Mini-Game: Spb Xonix II

To get some wood you should go to the joiner's shop where you should cut wooden panels. While cutting you should be patient, fast in response and quick-witted. You have to trick guileful spanners, bearing balls and other enemies which do everything to hamper your work.

Mini-Game: Spb Bubbles

To get some water you should go to the island's edge where with the help of a crossbow and water bubbles you will be able to fill up water tanks. When earning water you should be patient, fast in response and quick-witted. Remember that feeble branches of old trees cannot hold up heavy bubbles filled with water for a long time.

Mini-Game: Spb Arkaball II

To get some bricks you should go to deserted caves where by controlling the magic ball and with the help of a tub you'll become a quarrier. When forcing your way through different rocks you should be patient, fast in response and quick-witted. Take care of your magic ball. The tub is absolutely useless without it.

Dec 28 Airscanner Reveals Possible Security Vulnerability With Spb Kiosk

Security firm Airscanner has disclosed details of two possible vulnerabilities on Spb Kiosk Engine. The software is used by enterprise clients to lockdown Windows Mobile Pocket PC devices. The Spb Kiosk Engine allows users to run custom applications in kiosk mode. In this mode, the target applications are the only ones that can be used on a specific Pocket PC device.

In one of the advisories, Airscanner warns users that despite the device lockdown, it is still possible to execute programs via 'features' of the running application (eg. Pocket Word will execute programs via hyperlink). In addition, autorun is still enabled on the devices, which allows anyone with a SD Card or CF card to execute their own code on the device.

Administrators should disable autorun on the device by placing an autorun.exe file in the \windows directory with read-only options.

Another vulnerability is related to how the software stores an administrator's password on the device.

Nov 17 AJAX-based web apps come to Windows Mobile phones

Opera Software has introduced an application framework for running advanced web applications on mobile phones using "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML," otherwise known as AJAX. Opera Platform enables a phone's local applications to be integrated with online content ranging from ordinary websites to advanced business support systems, according to the company.

AJAX enables the development of web applications that support dynamic updating of a page rather than entirely refreshing it. Such applications are increasingly popular for desktop computers, according to Opera, but the technology is even more appropriate for mobile phones, where slower network capacity and limited input methods have created barriers for user adoption.

Opera contends that using open standards Web technologies to create mobile applications is significantly easier and more cost efficient than traditional approaches. Web developers can "quickly and affordably" create new mobile applications and exisitng applications can easily be adapted to fit the mobile phone, the company says.

Nov 20 Album Art and Windows Media Player 10 Mobile

"I have a love-hate relationship with Windows Media Player 10's Sync feature. On one end, it works great. Tracks are compressed to deliver the best balance between size and quality whilst simultaneously being copied over to my Pocket PC. On the other end, it's catastrophic when things fail to work properly. One of these involves that mystical case of missing album art. "Where's my album art?!" - This is a question I see being asked time and time again on forums, newsgroups, and even amongst friends. Yes, welcome to the world of album art gone AWOL.
You soon discover that no amount of hair-pulling makes it work again, and Microsoft's FAQ offers very little help either. Note that Windows Media Player 10 Mobile has issues dealing with album art embedded in media files, so what other options are there?

Luckily, there's a solution. It's a manual fix, but it works. Whether you use the Sync feature or not, the best way to organise your media is as follows:

<Artist>\<Album>\*.*

So, looking at a real-world example such as the Extraordinary Ways album by Conjure One (one of my newly-discovered favourites), your music might sport the following folder structure: \SD Card\Music\Conjure One\Extraordinary Ways\
In that folder, you should have your media (whether it be MP3 or WMA) and your album art (as a JPG file). If you find you have a whole collection of leftover JPG files from a failed synchronisation, find the one you want to keep as your album art and delete the rest. Alternatively, you could pop over to Amazon and download their album art. The most important step now is to rename that album art JPG file as Folder.jpg and ensure that it resides in the same folder as your media (for that particular album). Don't worry about resizing the album art as Windows Media Player 10 Mobile will perform that step automatically. Take a quick look at the screenshot above if you need some guidance.
That's it! Restart Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, sit back, relax, and enjoy your album art the way it should be."
