GPSToday Pocket PC software

UPDATED v0.9.9.7 Beta is available for download now !

New May 10 '09:
  • Update your twitter status manually from within the GPSToday app. Just send a message to username 'twitter' via the Inbox in GPSToday.
  • Upload your GeoLogger log files from within the app and view on desktop and export to GPX format on your online GeoGroups page.
  • If you already have version 0.9.9.7, you do not need to update your installation of GPSToday to access the above 2 new features.

  • April 29, '09, New/updated features in version 0.9.9.7:
  • Driving/Walking directions in many countries, with traffic-optimization option.
  • Log file plotting on map and animated "playback". Also, the geologger will now never clip corners, and will perfectly follow loopy highway ramps. You can now also upload your log-files to the desktop website.(full-featured log-editing on the desktop coming soon)
  • Location Tracking and sharing (GeoLocation). Track your location history online for your own private use, or share with friends/family. The power-saving ability of GPSToday means you can leave it on indefinitely without worrying about the battery.
  • Easily and privately (or publicly) share points-of-interest, pictures, messages with like-minded folks (GeoGroups). eg. Track or update swine-flu locations, right from your phone. The possibilities are endless.
  • 'Slideshow' through all your address-book contacts on the map, or through driving directions, or local search results, or all friends' mobile locations
  • Satellite,Hybrid map views, and many more enhancements for ease of use.
  • Nearly worldwide support for many features that were previously US only.
  • viewed and exported to GPX format online at ://www.geoterrestrial.com/geogroups/
  • Essentially the works, all in a still small package. More features are listed below the screenshots.

  • This software will not work on OS older than Windows Mobile 5.0 versions, or on any non-touchscreen smartphone. Data plan is recommended for online map features, but not necessary for offline features like geologging or geotagging. An Integrated GPS is advisable (but not mandatory) to fully enjoy the software.

  • It utilizes intelligent algorithms to always maintain and display a fix on your position right on your today screen, without draining the battery.
  • Always see your full street address, not just geo-coordinates.
  • GPSToday always shows the distance to the nearest contact from your device's address book.
  • Single tap to create a new contact with your current location as the address, or save the current location as an existing contact's address. Imagine not having to type the full street address on the PPC keyboard!
  • You will never need the stylus to use GPSToday!
  • Speed, heading and satellite data is shown clearly on the today screen whenever the GPS is running.
  • In-pocket tap protection. A single tap on the today screen only operates the GPS in quick fix mode. To fully start the GPS in continuous mode requires an iphone like sliding motion, guaranteeing no pocket accidents.
  • Single tap from the today screen to access fully draggable online maps!
  • Always see all your address book contacts on the map. Just tap a contact to quickly call/email or send sms.
  • Single tap from today screen to quickly do a yahoo local search around your current position and see the results on a live map. Just tap a result to call or open the website.
  • High quality Yelp Reviews for local search results!
  • Fetch the full street address for any point on the map.
  • GPSToday automatically disables data access when your device goes into roaming mode.
  • New! Install the GeoTagger add-on to have pictures automatically geo-tagged with current location!
  • You can also manually geotag single or sets of pictures by selecting the desired location on the map.
  • And many more features.
  • Best of all, its free!

Great little app. A few issues, minor ones. -The contacts info won't disappear when the box is unchecked. -I input my "home" and "work" addresses but they don't appear on the screen. A huge plus in the coolness factor department is that as you move the street addy appears on the display... very neat. Still playing with it as I get time. Can't wait to get 1.0. Can you guys give us a run down on what will be in the new release and approximately when it will go live? /Regards.

Splitter, We are looking at the contacts info not disappearing. Did you get the latest version 0.9.1? About the home/work addresses not appearing, GPSToday should automatically pick up modifications/additions to your address book within a few seconds, sometimes more depending on the size of your address book. However, in some cases, some entries might have problems if there is extra information like apartment or suite number etc added to the street address. This is a known issue and will be fixed in later versions.

This software is a very cool idea, but did not work well for me. I kept getting an error, Error Getting Address! This happened, while I had a strong GPS signal, which other software detected with no problem. The map also showed as blank, with just a cursor in the center. I saw a version .9.1 mentioned, but I only see the download link for .9.0 I am attempting to use this on an ATT Tilt (8925). Thanks

David, Huh. If you "suspect" something, you are free not to use GPSToday. Google Maps, Yahoo Go, Microsoft Live Search etc are all free products, and we cannot hope to compete with them if we charge for our basic product. We have not advertised that driving directions are yet available as a feature, but still hundreds of users have found GPSToday useful. We are still just at version 0.9.3, and the best is yet to come.

Jake, by default, GPSToday does not attempt to get a lock by itself outside of 8:00am to 8:00pm(can change this in settings). To make sure you get a lock the first time around, go outdoors and slide the red button and drop it over onto the right, and don't let the device turn off until the red button turns fully green. Sometimes the first lock might take as long as 4-5 minutes. Then after a few moments you can stop the GPS by repeating the same sliding motion. Subsequent fixes should now automatically happen much faster.

timex, It looks like you didn't even start the GPS? The initial estimate shown before you start the GPS is usually something like a nearby city center. And, we know the 8525 does not have a built-in GPS, therefore GPSToday will probably not be very useful to you.

fazluke, Even though the map location will usually be 100% correct, the street address will be very accurate for some users, and not for some. This field and the data sources are still evolving. As you can see not many other products provide this feature. As all navigation products disclaim, this is meant to be used as an additional piece of information while you travel, do not depend solely on it. As the data sources and algorithms get better, the accuracy will increase automatically, without you having to upgrade your application.

The next release will have a way to automatically geocode/geotag the pictures you take from your device camera, with the latitude/ longitude/ altitude of your current position. Since every device's camera has its own peculiarities, and we cannot possibly buy each and every device to test it on, it will be helpful if owners of devices with built-in GPS *AND* camera can snap one picture, and email it to us at the email address on the geoterrestrial website support page http://www.geoterrestrial.com/support/ . Please make sure to capture something totally obscure without any identifying information in the picture whatsoever, and just include the model-name and the word "picture" or "pic" or "photo" in the subject. e.g "xv6800 pic", or "att tilt pic" etc. This will allow us to specifically certify the geocoding functionality for a wide variety of devices. We will post daily on the website when we no-longer need sample pictures for a particular model.

The geo-location is added to your pictures JPEG Exif data so you don't need to perform any extra steps or maintain additional pieces of data. Flickr will automatically recognize the geo-location of pictures geo-tagged with GPSToday GeoTagger. Flexible: You are not restricted to automatic geo-tagging with GPS location only. Hi alessio, Outside the US, the app will not be able to show your street address on the today screen, and it will not be able to fetch street addresses for points on the map outside the US. You can thus un-check the "Show Address on Today Screen" option in Settings. This will conserve CPU and battery power for you as it will stop trying to get the street address for your location, and it will instead show latitude/longitude/altitude and time of last fix on the today screen. Also, some international users have reported that the date format difference in Europe (dd/mmy/yyyy) prevents the geotagger from finding recent pictures, but please try this on your own to see if it works for you. Everything else should work.

Hi Chuck, the Mogul has had a history of GPS related issues, with all the various ROMs/Radios etc floating around to expose the previously hidden GPS chip. GPSToday depends on the WM OS GPS supplied driver to function properly, which is apparently not configured properly in many of the mogul roms around. We suggest you head over to http://forum.ppcgeeks.com to find solutions. Thanks

sueln, From what we know the 8525 does not have an inbuilt GPS, so GPSToday might be of limited use to you. However, if you have an external bluetooth GPS that works with your device, then yes, GPSToday will work fine with that over the ATT network.

Brad, did you start the logger by going to Map->More->GeoLogger? There you have choose the directory and filename and tap on Start. If you start a new log by specifying a new filename, an empty log file will get created immediately. Also, an entry is logged whenever the GPS obtains a fix regardless of whether you moved or not, and also an entry is logged when you choose "Log to file" from the Map->More->Map Position menu.

Also, are you sure you did a hard reset (where the device is completely re-initialized to factory settings), or you only did a soft-reset which is more like a restart? About the tracking and location sharing, it is all disabled by default when you install the software. You can see others only because they have specifically shared their location. Remember that you can access all the public POIs and user-locations in the social network, without having to be active in it yourself(as a read-only member). You can choose to disable even that if you wish and use GPSToday solely for its offline features like the geologger, the geotagger etc.

Jamie, It needs to download maps on the go from the internet. It does have NZ maps. If you don\'t have a data plan, you can still use the geologger and geotagger if you need those, both of which are offline features. Thanks

LincoT, legally we do not support use of the software while driving yourself. Providing the mirroring feature would imply that we do. However this is something we will reevaluate in the future. Thanks

The program itself doesnt cost anything, but in its default configuration it does connect to the internet frequently to update your weather and nearby services. You can disable these features and still use the Geologger and Geotagger, which do not require a connection.
