PIM Backup allows you to backup/restore the Personal information of the Pocket PC like Contacts, Appointments, Tasks etc.
Restore contacts:
It is possible now to restore a text file containing contacts backed up from other applications, like in Outlook Express, the only constraint is that the first line should contain the fields and the fields need a separator. (See screenshots). The tool allows to map default fields to fields found in the file. It is possible now to insert duplicates.
Backup messages:
The mail database is completely parsed to retrieve all the messages stored in every directory and subdirectory. It is possible to select which account and directories should be backed up. You can save attachments as wel if they exist on the pocket pc.
Restore messages:
Same as the backup, you can select which account and directories should be restored to the device. Caution, if an account doesn't exist on the pocket pc, this application will discard the messages that belong to that account.
Restore appointments:
There was a bug in PPCBckpContacts where appointments with the same name on different dates weren't restored. This should be fixed in this tool.
Schedule backup:
It is possible to schedule a backup, each day of the week and this at a specific hour. If the pocket pc is suspended, it will wake up and do the backup. You can eventually control the number of backups to keep and switch off the pocket pc after the scheduled backup is finished.
The schedule backup creates a notification that can be cleared via the Options Menu.
File types:
There is only one file type now, which is .pib (Personal Information Backup), in fact it is just a zip file (so you can open it with a zip application) which contain the different text files used in PPCBckpContacts, so you can still extract these files, edit them on a pc using Excel or Notepad and eventually restore them without putting them back in the .pib file.
For users with Windows Mobile 2003 SE, please download this software here.

This is phenominal. I just had a problem this would have been amazing for two weeks ago. If your data port is broken, then thre is no way to transfer data (besides bluetooth, but have fun with that). With this, you flawlessly copy the basic data (contacts, messages, call records, et cetera) to he memory card. Also, with internet access, e-mail it as a file attachment. A very simple program, that is working for me. 9/10
Muratkhan (Toshiba G900) wrote...
Nice for backing up speed dials and backing up to memory card. And a big plus for not requiring installation (just run the exe file) 8/10
james wrote...
I agree with s. kiel. I also have a mogul and today had a crash to where it would lock on boot up. had to hard reset and lost it all. plus activesync takes all outlook files too.... A+

meckah you are mising the point, this program allows you to backup to memory card not your PC so that when you are away and data lose occurs you can recover your data! Very good programe indeed.

PimBackup where have you been all my life? Thank you for this wonderful program because with all the "cough cough" reliability of windows mobile something tells me my Mogul be using it more than baby oil slip n slide at a Frat house. So on behalf of the Mogul users and windows based mobiles everywhere....Thank You!

very nice program.. 2.7 worked great.. the new 2.8 doesn't seem to be remembering my scheduling preferences though... i have it set to every other day, hit validate, do a backup, close the program... when i open it back up, goto scheduling, it is again set to the default, everyday, 3 backup etc... hmm, a bug? besides that, great program!! p

does this program backup POP mail configs, bookmarks, prederences for applications?
Thomas Fink wrote...
Excellent. The most important program for PDA besides Word and Excel. Very easy to use. Only drawback is that looking at the extracted data I find that the files contain huge amounts of data like (0x7E,0x47,0xBE ....) and only a minority of relevant Text. But that is nothing a clever filter could not fix. Excellent
Anand wrote...
Just Great!!! Whoever developed this great software, Hats off... Used to get scared everytime when I plug in my datacard to connect to the internet coz if I happen to unplug it unaware of activesync working on my mobile, I would loose all my data... Thanks Again!!!!
Angel wrote...
Great software ... just used it to make a backup on my old WM5 phone, then emailed the backup and the exe to myself and restored on my new (WM6) phone. I couldn't believe when I found that the PIM software doesn't have its own export or sync function. A godsend for those of us who don't have a windows PC to run activesync on.
Angel wrote...
On the other hand ... some of the default selections seem a little odd. Like for messages, my IMAP accounts are selected by default (why do I need a backup of stuff that's stored on the server?), but SMS isn't. Still, a pretty good software
Angel wrote...
Bah ... be warned that MMS messages come out corrupted and unviewable.

Where can I get a .cab file version of this? Usually when I choose the mobi friendly version, that's what I get. I'd really like to try this program but can't sync with blasted vista, and yes, I've tried all the programs that are SUPPOSED to make syncing with Vista possible.

I highly recommend this program. I lost almost all of my contacts thanks to the assumed automation and lack of control in ActiveSynch. Not to mention how much of a pain it was to force them back on the phone from my PC. Couldn't... had to use a second system.

...very useful tool :-) ... but there is no way to select any folder from internal storage-card to be backuped (in custom section)- using this tool with my HTC touch diamond... selecting the internal storage-card to save the backup works... any solution? greetingsfrom Germany

To backup folders: 1 mark the option custom 2 select options 3 add files or olders
Hans wrote...
I\'m sorry. I have to mention one additional step to backup folders: 1 mark the option custom 2 click on the option Custom and the grayed options box will become available 3 select options 4 add files or olders
aly1967 wrote...
...no, no...the described way is well known to me, but it seems like a bug: - when I select \"add files\" there appears a tree with root \"my device\", below there are the several folders and files in it. one of these shown folders is \"Interner Speicher\" (don`t know how its named in English version) - this represents the internal 4Gbyte storage - when I select \"add folder\" there will appear the same list of folders- but the \"Interner Speicher\" item is missed. so I can΄t select any folder within the internal storage :-( regards
Hans wrote...
So far as I discovered it is not posible to make a backup of folders on your SD-card. I thinks thats a logical choice of the developer because you can transfer/backup these folders to your PC. I think even (I\'ve not tested it) with the normal Windows backup utility.

Copy or move this file to any place in your device, and then click on the exe file to activate PIM Backup. I put the exe on my storage card, and set up a new folder \"Pim Backups\" where I store the backups its makes. Hope this helps you.

I can successfully run the backup and produce the .PIB (ZIP) file. When I extract files from that they do not appear to be in a text format - I cannot read them, at least not in a convenient manner using either Excel or Notepad as suggested. I would like to get these into XML ( need to transfer to other platforms). I\'d be glad to write the conversion code if you could supply the file formats for these .PBA, PBC, .PBL, .PBX files. Thanx
